How to Handle Incident Communication Like a Pro

Downtime is inevitable. Chaos is optional. A guide to writing clear, empathetic incident updates.

1. Acknowledge Quickly

Don't wait for a fix to post an update. Post "We are investigating an issue" immediately. Speed matters more than details in the first 5 minutes.

2. Be Specific, Not Technical

Bad: "The redis shard on us-east-1 rebalanced incorrectly."

Good: "Some users may experience slow load times while we optimize our database."

3. Update Regularly

Even if nothing has changed, post an update every 30-60 minutes: "We are still working on the fix." Silence causes panic.

4. The Post-Mortem

After the dust settles, write a Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Explain what happened, why, and how you'll prevent it next time.
